Celebrating community and the arts, this event invites our neighbors and the community at large to learn about, engage in, soak up, talk about, be inspired by, see, hear and feel art, artists and arts education programs.

The event is FREE, though we ask that you to bring nonperishable food items for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC), our featured partner for this community event. 

Help us reach our goal to collect 500 lbs. of food at the Art Party!

Individual Timed Activities

Sentara Healthcare Fitness Walk
9:30am, Quad
Join your neighbors at 9:30am on the Quad for a 3 mile fitness walk with Lesley Spalding. Lesley, Art of Movement Director, is Reebok Body Walk trained, and she will lead participants on a scenic walk into the Occoquan Regional Park, down to the historic brick kiln and back to the Workhouse Quad.

Workhouse artist Hsi-Mei Yates is a master in Chinese Brush Painting, and she will demonstrate the technique with bookmarks, showing and telling about quick and simple ways to finish small projects.

Instrument Petting Zoo

Potomac Arts Academy presents an Instrument Petting Zoo! Youngsters are invited to see, touch and play various instruments.

Fairfax Choral Society

Fairfax Choral Society presents interactive musical activities for the whole family.

Gotta Love Herbs!
12:30pm, Quad
Herbs are not just for eating. Join Jo Sellers to hear about some of the historical and hysterical ways folks used herbs in the past, and still do in the present! Fossil Rock Farm will provide herbs for this talk and they will have a wide variety of herbs for sale.

Art to Wear Fashion Show by the Workhouse Fiber Artists
1pm, Building W-6 Archway
The Workhouse fiber artists will highlight their wearables with an informal fashion show. Models will walk the quad and answer questions as they go.  Clothing, accessories and jewelry in the show will be displayed and for sale in Building W-6 following the walk.  Don't miss this opportunity to see high quality art-to-wear and get a head start on a fashionable summer wardrobe. Artists include: Ann Liddle, Marilyn Harrington, Connie Diamante, Sandi Goldman, Gretchen Klimoski, Alice Abrash, Joan Hutten, Carol Hamilton and Jen Athanas.

Community Runway Show
1:30pm, Building W-11 Walkway
Artistic items can be worn as a signature piece, not only to complement an outfit but also as an expression of one’s individuality. Signature artistic pieces will be featured during the Community Runway Show. Art Party guests are invited to be part of this show with their decorative accessories made during the event!

Storytelling for Grownups
2pm, Rizer Pavilion Stage
Better Said Than Done, Inc. is a community of professional storytellers.  They produce themed storytelling shows throughout Northern Virginia and beyond, featuring experienced performers from their team of storytellers.  In 2013, Better Said Than Done was voted the best performing arts company in Virginia by Virginia Living Magazine. With stories ranging in length from 7-10 minutes, the shows are energetic, engaging and highly entertaining.  They may be funny, poignant, silly, or unbelievable, but they will convince audiences that life is better in the telling.
Art Party storytellers include: Karen Lee, Miriam Nadel, Ellouise Schoettler, Anne Thomas and Anna Marie Trester.

Community Pillow Fight! BYOPillow!
3pm, Quad
Missed National Pillow Fight Day on the National Mall? Join us at 3pm for a re-match at the Workhouse! Bring your own pillow and your playful spirit, meet on the Quad and listen for the whistle that says, let the pillow fight begin!!

 

Recurring Timed Activities

Kite Making and Flying
11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm AND 2:30pm while supplies last, Rizer Pavilion
Decorate and put together your own delta kite and try it out on the Quad! Space is limited so the kite making station will use a timed seating system.

Music Together Demonstrations for Children 6 months to 4 Years
11:30am, 12:10pm AND 1pm. Building W-3, Classroom 303 
Participate in a Music and Movement demonstration for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Sessions are timed and space is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum 10 children with parents per session!

Visual Arts Exploration Tours
12pm AND 1pm, Building W-16 Entrance
Explore, learn about and enjoy the various art mediums represented in the Workhouse artist studios.

Art in Science!
Art in Science with Sal Bosco! Sal's exhibit will illustrate how he interfaces his interest in the sciences and his interest in art. He will provide examples of some of his microfossil drawings and will discuss how art and science, while different, can and do support each other.

Children’s Snickerdoodle Story Time
Story times (ages 4-7): 12:30pm AND 2pm, Quad
Meet Snickerdoodle author Clare Grosgebauer and enjoy stories and activities.

History Corner
The history corner features exhibits, period dress and activities from George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Historic Manassas, Mill House Museum in Occoquan, Turning Point Suffragist Memorial, Historic Pohick Church, Gunston Hall, Fairfax Station Railroad Museum and the Workhouse Prison Museum.

Youth Activities with the US Army Child, Youth & School Services at Fort Belvoir
Activities will change throuout the day and include functional fitness bootcamp, start smart drills for golf, basketball and soccer.

Learn about the art of glass blowing and the Workhouse Glass Program with demonstrations throughout the day in the Building W-8 hot shop.

Workhouse Ceramics Program Ice Cream Social BOWL PREVIEW!
Visit Building W-8, home of the Workhouse Ceramics Program, and get a sneak preview of the hand-made ice cream bowls created by Workhouse students, ceramic artists and instructors for the 5th Annual Ice Cream Social Fundraiser being held on Saturday, July 13!
