W-9: “Shadows and Light” by Russ Mardon- Double Month Feature

“Every picture has its shadows and it has some source of light”. So begins Joni Mitchell’s mediation on the contradictions we face living in a world of cruelty and delight. Her evocative lyrics were no doubt informed by her experience as a painter. In her prolific artistic career, Joni Mitchell produced hundreds of paintings that showcase her varied use of color, line, and contrast to tell stories and convey emotions with an admirable economy and sparseness. Russ Mardon tries to build on her example to create paintings that engage the viewer with clarity and focus, warm and cool, shadows and light. Many of the works on display are new for this Arches Gallery exhibit.
