I have been teaching art, mostly but not exclusively watercolor painting, for over 54 years beginning as a high school art teacher in Richmond Public Schools, followed by several years as teaching at Parker-Gray Middle School in Alexandria. While raising three sons I taught private students around my dining room table, then taught for park and recreation departments and as an adjunct on weekends for continuing education departments in both Virginia and Maryland. I held classes at the Art League School for over 32 years, have led many national and international painting trips, most recently to the Extremadura region of Spain last March. I have been on the Workhouse Art Center's Faculty since it opened in 2008 and am currently teaching three adult classes a week here in building 6. The only way to teach for so many years without growing stale is to continue learning new techniques and new approaches with watercolor, so I continue to enroll in workshops with nationally recognized artists whose work I admire. That means that I am constantly being challenged to learn new skills which I can explore for myself as I share them with my students. These paintings are examples of four of the special techniques that I have been teaching in my classes recently. All of them were begun as class demonstrations — showing students the “how” of these processes.
