W-5: "Nephology" by Monica Stroik

Since receiving my MFA, at the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I work within the processes of series, creating bodies of work that are ignited by ideas. My paintings often reference the natural organic environment in relation to a man-made structured environment. My work can also be site-specific, considering the individual’s perception of everyday surroundings by exploring the ideas of peripheral vision, perspective, and memory. My process begins with drawings, photographs, and writings about the experience of the place, the space,
the sounds, the colors, and the materials.

For this new body of work, I am playing with the dichotomy of composition within the intersection of elements that reference the human need for nature and beauty. This specific visual enticement has helped sustained me through the past several years.
