W-6: “Alebrije Skin” by Marisela Rumberg

Come join Marisela Rumberg on Saturday, June 10th, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm for the Opening Reception of her new exhibit called "Alebrije Skin."

Alebrijes are mystical "guardian spirits" in Mexican culture. These imaginary creatures combine elements from different animals, for example, dragon bodies, butterfly wings, and rabbit ears. Colorfully painted, they were originally made using the ancient Mexican paper-making form of cartoneria. Today they are usually made of paper-mache and sometimes carved from wood.

The handmade paper-mache sculptures she's featuring in this exhibit have "Alebrije Skin" (Piel de Alebrije): cotton fabric scraps form a skin with many different patterns, colors, textures, and images. They make us remember the original Alebrijes of her native Mexico and each of them is loaded with tons of good vibes and wishes for the collector that acquires it.

Show Dates: 6/7 - 7/2/2023

Reception Date: 6/10, 6 PM -9 PM
