Background
Kate Brogdon was born in Vienna, Austria, and spent her childhood moving across the United States, primarily in Idaho. She has lived in multiple locations worldwide, shaping her global perspective. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and gained a diverse range of professional experiences, including 25 years of active duty service in the Marine Corps. Alongside her career, she has pursued ongoing artistic education through various in-person and online courses. Her work has received awards in exhibitions across Southern California, Virginia, and virtual platforms. She currently resides in Stafford, Virginia.
Kate’s artistic practice is multidisciplinary, incorporating photography, oil painting, drawing, and collage. Over the years, she has explored different ways to combine these mediums, often layering images and materials to create dynamic, textured compositions. While she occasionally works solely in oil, photography remains a constant in her creative process, serving as a foundation for her mixed-media approach.
Philosophy
Kate Brogdon’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by her experiences living in diverse cultures around the world. She is fascinated by how individuals develop their worldviews based on personal backgrounds and experiences. Her work explores this concept by integrating photography, paint, and found ephemera, creating a visual representation of multiple perspectives within a multifaceted world.
Kate views her creative process as a way of collecting experiences—gathering images, materials, and ideas to examine how people perceive and interact with their surroundings. She is particularly interested in how children form their own opinions and understanding of the world. Through photography, collage, and painting, she blends observation with imagination, producing layered compositions that merge reality with the fantastical.
