The Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative (WMAI) is dedicated to empowering the military community by providing engaging arts programs that cater to their unique experiences. We offer a wide range of communal art activities designed to foster creativity and connection through expert-led classes, family craft workshops, and open studio art sessions. Our programs are available to all branches of the U.S. military, including veterans, active-duty personnel, retirees, reservists, and their dependent family members.

Art Classes & Workshops for Veterans Only
Discover a diverse range of art classes thoughtfully designed for the military community, open to Veterans, active-duty, retirees, reservists, and their dependent family members, fostering creativity and connection for all.
Our Ceramic Classes and Veterans Open Studio provide a welcoming space exclusively for Veterans, active-duty personnel, retirees, and reservists to create and connect.
For those looking to try something NEW, our Make & Takes and Try Me! Classes offer fun, hands-on experiences in mediums like glass, painting, and mixed media.
FREE Counseling Service
Free counseling services are available through BeeU Counseling
BeeU Counseling, located at Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia, offers a safe and validating environment for individuals to explore and address their mental health needs. Specializing in counseling and psychotherapy for children (ages 3 and up), adolescents, and adults, our services include play therapy for younger clients.
Their experienced team utilizes evidence-based treatment modalities to support clients in their healing and growth journeys., and is committed to providing personalized care that fosters empowerment and well-being.
General Workhouse Art Classes & Workshops
Explore your creative side with General Workhouse Classes! Military personnel and their families can apply for a tuition waiver for any class or course (excluding Kidnastics, Irish Dance, Music Together, and the Music program through Jordan Kitts).
Each family member is eligible for one FREE class or workshop per quarter to make inspiring educational experiences accessible.
To apply, browse available classes, then complete the Tuition Waiver form on this page with your class details and proof of service. Our team will process your request, and the registrar will notify you. Start your creative journey today!

Become a WMAI
Artist in Residence
Veterans, active-duty personnel, retirees, or reservists can become a WMAI Artist in Residence, receiving studio rent for two years in exchange for teaching classes, curating exhibits, and serving as program ambassadors. This role offers the opportunity to create, exhibit, and sell original artwork while inspiring nearly 100,000 annual Workhouse visitors.

Becoming a WMAI Volunteer is a meaningful way to support the arts and the military community. Volunteers assist with arts-related events, classes, and exhibits that empower veterans and their families. They play a vital role in the success of the WMAI program by helping to create a welcoming and inspiring environment for all participants.
