W-5: "WaterWORKS" by Laura Bruce

Influences For This Show - WaterWORKS

Water has always been a powerful, soothing, life-force for Laura Bruce due to its massive size, turquoise, blue colors and soothing sounds. For this years show she thought it would be fun to paint different scenarios of water for some refreshing escapes.

'“It all started when I painted an over head angle of a koi pond and discovered how much fun it was to paint the fish in motion. I found it quite challenging to capture the water as it moved along with the koi and the interesting patterns it left behind. ‘East of Eden’ was inspired from a pond in my backyard where I have spent countless hours studying it’s ever changing seasons. Are you able to locate the frog? Look closely….

‘Koi Magic’, ‘Koi Dreams’ and ‘Jump for Koi’ all were inspired by watching them swim up from the darkness as the sunlight catches their spectacular colors.

Wrapping it all up is ‘Flamingo’. Have you ever wondered why flamingos are pink or orange? When flamingos hatch, their feathers are actually a drab light gray. So why are flamingos pink as adults? The bright pink color of flamingos comes from beta carotene, a red-orange pigment that’s found in high numbers within the algae, larvae, and brine shrimp that flamingos eat in their wetland environment. Pretty interesting stuff, eh?

So, take a moment to wander past my art and try to imagine stepping into the water with some koi or a very pink flamingo!”
