Since receiving my MFA, at the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I work within the processes of series, creating bodies of work that are ignited by ideas.

Muhulakshmi was born in Southern India and was raised in the Netherlands before finally settling in Virginia. She holds a bachelor’s in studio art from Virginia Tech. She started exploring pastels during her bachelors and it was love at first sight. The rich colors and the immediate effect of pastels had her hooked. There was no looking back after that. Although she still works in oil paint, acrylic, pen and ink, and watercolors, pastels are her primary medium.

Many sculptural materials are heavy and require specialized tools to work with. Not so with papier mache. Yes, you/your child used it in kindergarten!! But it is a very versatile,lightweightt, and available material for all kinds of sculptures.

Ceramic Resident Artists display their varied interpretations of the clay medium, from sculptural to functional.

Always evolving and growing, Cheryl feels her art is a process of a beautiful story unfolding and being told over the years of experimentation, exploration, intense moments of emotion to euphoric moments of expression. Learning, changing and being brave add layers to the years of creating art. Her art journey started at an early elementary age envisioning glorious fashion shows before she even knew what they were. Finger painting in kindergarten was one of her first memories of total artistic bliss.

Art is joy; art is a song of joy residing in the heart of an artist. Katharine’s song is felt as a creative surge from deep within her heart, bursting forth, smashing through perceived personal limitations and received as a gracious gift from the Universe.

Lynn Goldstein shares her newest work:

At one time, I was focused on capturing a sense of place in my landscape paintings, I now find myself more interested in the painting process and the feelings that bubble to the surface while I am working. This change in emphasis is a result of my fascination with distressed frescoes in Italy, peeling paint on walls of buildings, and the textures that are found in the natural environment.

The exhibition showcases the artwork of the eleven Workhouse Ceramics instructors. Visitors will see a broad variety of of aesthetic sensibilities, forming techniques, and firing methods, and a glimpse of the potential that clay offers for personal expression.

Small Works are great for gifts. Building 10 artists are presenting reasonably-priced original art work to choose from, great for holiday gift giving.

Black is sophisticated and a classic used in clothing, decorations, and artwork while white is somewhat quieter and subdue; yet it is definitely brighter. But place these two together and they allow each other to take center stage. Designing glass beads with back and white are striking when placed near each other because of their high contrasts. However, when black and white are used as a background for red, yellow, blue or any color, they present a space for colors to pop and they grab our attention. Special effects are magnified when designing glass beads with black and white. There’s nothing quite like black and white glass.

Art created is a manifestation of skill, experience and spirit utilizing various mediums in creative ways to communicate between the artist and the viewer. The tapestry series was originally inspired by the Rajasthani tapestries of India. It has taken on added inspirations of flora and fauna and special materials. Crystals from the Czech Republic and Austria, recycled glass made into tiles from Turkey, ceramic microtiles from Morocco, murrini glass from Italy, findings and glass from China, along with glass made by small family owned businesses in the USA are used to create unique works symbolizing that we can all work together to create beauty.

When visiting the Workhouse, some see what was, the history of a place of incarceration, possible rehabilitation, cruelty, and abuse. Others see the potential, what can be, a place for exciting new experiences, creativity, and fun. In these paintings I have hope present a chance to experience the Workhouse as it is now.

This show is to demonstrate the diversity of Carol Mather interests in creating art and her love of nature.

Studio W-5's October show "Vases with Faces" features artist Kathy Stoner's colorful, whimsical folk art take on traditional florals.

Building 5 artists will display art work interpreting the title "End of Summer Blues”.

Building W-5’s Group Exhibit “End of Summer Blues” will host an opening reception during the Second Saturday Art Walk on September 10, 2022, 6pm - 9pm.. Participating artists include Michele Montalbano and Lynn Goldstein.
